Quick answer: In adults without diabetes, a normal fasting sugar is 70–99 mg/dL, below 140 mg/dL two hours after a meal, and HbA1c is below 5.7%. A fasting sugar of 126 mg/dL or more, or HbA1c of 6.5% or more (confirmed on repeat), suggests diabetes.

“Sugar kitni honi chahiye?” is one of the most common questions patients ask. In Pakistan, laboratories and glucometers report blood sugar in mg/dL, so this guide uses mg/dL throughout. Numbers can look confusing, so here is a simple chart.
Normal blood sugar levels for adults without diabetes
| Test | Normal | Prediabetes | Diabetes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fasting sugar (no food for 8 hours) | 70–99 mg/dL | 100–125 mg/dL | 126 mg/dL or more |
| 2 hours after a meal or glucose tolerance test | Below 140 mg/dL | 140–199 mg/dL | 200 mg/dL or more |
| HbA1c (average of ~3 months) | Below 5.7% | 5.7%–6.4% | 6.5% or more |
| Random sugar (any time) | Usually below 140 mg/dL | – | 200 mg/dL or more with symptoms |
One abnormal result does not always mean diabetes. Doctors usually repeat the test, unless the sugar is very high with clear symptoms.
Sugar targets if you already have diabetes
For many adults with diabetes, common targets are:
- Before meals: 80–130 mg/dL
- 1–2 hours after starting a meal: below 180 mg/dL
- HbA1c: about 7% or lower
These are general targets. Your doctor may set a different goal if you are older, have heart or kidney disease, or have had low sugar episodes. A reading below 70 mg/dL is low; read what to do in our low blood sugar guide.
mg/dL and mmol/L: how to convert
Some devices and foreign reports use mmol/L. Divide the mg/dL number by 18 to convert. For example, 100 mg/dL is about 5.6 mmol/L, 126 mg/dL is 7.0 mmol/L, 180 mg/dL is 10 mmol/L and 200 mg/dL is about 11.1 mmol/L.
How to measure sugar correctly at home
- Wash and dry your hands first. Sugary or wet fingers can give a falsely high reading.
- Check that the strips are not expired and match your meter.
- For a fasting test, do not eat for 8 hours. Water is fine.
- Home meters can differ from a laboratory result by up to about 15%, so use the lab for diagnosis.
- Keep a diary of readings and bring it to your doctor.
Things that change your readings
- What and how much you ate, especially roti, rice and sweet drinks
- Illness, infection, pain or stress
- Steroid tablets and some other medicines
- Poor sleep, dehydration and lack of activity
- For HbA1c: anaemia and some blood conditions can make the result less reliable, so tell your doctor if you have them
When to see a doctor
- Fasting sugar of 100 mg/dL or more, or HbA1c of 5.7% or more (prediabetes range)
- Fasting sugar of 126 mg/dL or more, or HbA1c of 6.5% or more
- Increased thirst, frequent urination, tiredness or blurred vision
Go to hospital urgently if your sugar is very high (for example above 300 mg/dL) together with vomiting, fast breathing, drowsiness or confusion, or if you have a low sugar that does not improve with sugar or juice.

Roman Urdu mein khulasa
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal sugar level by age?
For adults the normal ranges are the same. Children, pregnant women and older people may have different targets, so ask your doctor.
Is 110 mg/dL fasting sugar normal?
A fasting sugar of 100 to 125 mg/dL is in the prediabetes range. It is a warning, not diabetes. Get an HbA1c test, improve diet and activity, and repeat the test.
What is a dangerous sugar level?
A level below 54 mg/dL, or any low with confusion or fainting, is an emergency. A sugar that stays above 300 mg/dL, or is high with vomiting or drowsiness, also needs urgent care.
Is a random sugar of 140 mg/dL normal?
A random sugar below 140 mg/dL is usual in people without diabetes, especially after a meal. Higher readings should be followed up with a fasting sugar or HbA1c.
Which is better, HbA1c or fasting sugar?
They give different information. HbA1c shows the average of about 3 months and needs no fasting. Fasting sugar shows that morning's level. Doctors often use both.
